2011 TUTORS

Ricardo de Ostos is a parnter of Naja & Ostos http://naja-deostos.com, a London based architectural studio exploring symbiotic relations between emerging cultural patterns and architectural narratives. With a strong research based design focus attitude Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo de Ostos seek to generate an adventurous (and sometimes excitingly dangerous) but beneficial built environment through critical and challenging speculation. Their work is largely engaged in ambiguous situations within urban and social dynamics for which the studio explores alternative narrative-like scripts. Projects addressing catastrophic scenarios, contaminated landscapes, corporate fields and newborn cities are among the architect’s diversified portfolio. Although different in scope and scale, all their projects intend to craft a sense of place. From human-size installations to building-size architectural propositions to large-scale infrastructural projects NaJa & deOstos seeks to create an interwoven ecology of technology and culturally modified nature.

Lawrence Friesen studied at Dalhousie University, Canada, and worked at a number of architectural practices before setting up the Design Geometry studio at Buro Happold Engineers. In the past nine years he has been involved in a number of complex projects whose innovative realisation entailed digital fabrication. Architectural forms are designed, engineered and realised through a digital design process to engage with simulation software. Forms are translated into a material design process that is true to the intent of the design but have a spatial and material awareness that enhances the design realisation. Currently he is a studio tutor at the AA graduate masters program Design Research Lab (DRL).

Anne Save de Beaurecueil and Franklin Lee (www.subdv.com) use computation to generate environmentally responsive geometries for architecture and urban design projects worldwide. They previously taught at the Pratt Institute in New York, and received Master’s Degrees from Columbia University. They have published, exhibited and lectured about their work worldwide, including the Beijing Biennale, the Rotterdam Biennale, the Athens Synthasoris Exhibition, the London Festival of Architecture, and the Festival of Electronic Language (FILE) in São Paulo. The work of AA Diploma Unit 2 has been featured in AD, ArchiCree, and the AA Agendas 7 Articulated Grounds: Mediating Environment and Culture publication.

Hart Marlow (www.hartmarlow.com) studied architecture at Pratt Institute in New York where he received his Master of Architecture degree. He is a lead designer at su11, a design firm in Brooklyn N.Y., as well as an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania, Pratt Institute, and NYCCT. His work engages new media, emerging technologies, materiality, and fabrication producing a multi-platform approach to contemporary design.

As an artist and designer Scott Savage, who currently works for Associated Fabrication in Brooklyn, NY associatedfabrication.com, has cultivated interests in Architecture, Graphic Design, Printmaking, and Fabrication. As a graduate student at Pratt Institute he explored computational means of problem-solving including parametric design. He believes the best built environments embrace technology, cultural context, the environment, and craft.

Kengo Skorick studied at the Architectural Association, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Ecole d’Architecture a Versailles. He has a well-rounded professional background working in several countries for various types of architectural practices spanning between large (200+) to small (<5) scale, including experience as a framer for timber-frame houses. He is currently working for Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in London actively participating in the development of its corporate-wide digital users network. Notable past projects include the Chester Zoo Heart of Africa (09, Proctor and Matthews Architects) and Paul Milstein Hall Cornell University (04~06, Office for Metropolitan Architecture). He has been leading Grasshopper and other digital tool workshops with Arthur Mani for Diploma and Graduate-level programs at the London Metropolitan University and the Architectural Association since 2009.

Thiago Mundim graduated from Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil) in 2006 with a Bachelor Degree in Architecture and Urbanism, and practiced in Brazil and in the United Kingdom as a Project Designer and Manager before joining the Design Research Lab MArch programme (AADRL) in 2009. At the AA Thiago collaborated on the projects “Porosis” and “Craftman Robot”, both exhibited at the 2010 London Festival of Architecture. His recent master thesis project on new methods of digital fabrication, “Knitectonics” (www.knitectonics.com), has received project distinction at the AA and has been selected to be exhibited and presented at the international conference ACADIA2011 – Design Through Computation. Ernesto Bueno holds a diploma of Architecture and Urbanism from Universidad Central de Venezuela, a Master in Genetic Architectures from ESARQ – UIC (Barcelona Spain), and is PhD Candidate in the same research line. He is a Researcher, Professor and Lecturer on emergent strategies in architectural design and fabrication, such as algorithmic design, parametric modeling, and CAD/CAM, using advanced tools like Rhino, RhinoScript and Grasshopper. He resides in Brazil and is an editor of the blog Parametricismo

Victor Sardenberg works at SUBdV (SUBdV.com) and is currently a fourth year student at the Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie, is member of the research group Teo.Pro (Theory and Project in Digital Era) and of the artistic ensemble EPICAC Tropical. His activities are between architecture, arts, sound installations and computation.

Lucas Issey Kodama is currently studying Architecture at the Universidade Federal do Paraná as a fourth year student where he organizes activities regarding architectural design investigations and theory discussions. He works at AtelierUtraboMonteiro and has worked at SUBdV, both firms engaged with emergent strategies for architecture and urban design projects.
