This workshop will build on the explorations of the 2016 AA Visiting School HYPER|THREADS São Paulo robot workshop, taught by VISHU BHOOSHAN – CODE ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS ( http://www.zha-code-education.org/ ) and ALICIA NAHMAD – AA DESIGN RESEARCH LABORATORY (http://drl.aaschool.ac.uk/), using the KUKA robot arm at the INSTITUTO TECGRAF of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica Rio de Janeiro (PUC RIO), to invent new modes of designing and creating architecture. Specific to the Brazilian context, the workshop will combine the sophisticated fluid movement of the robot arm with simple low-tech local construction methodologies and materials to produce a critical and original contribution to the global discussion on the incorporation of robotic technologies for design. Students will work within Santiago Calagrava’s iconic Museu Do Amanhã(MAA) (the Musuem of Tomorrow), the most visited musuem of Brazil, using the digital fabrication facilities of the Laboratório de Atividades do Amanhã (LAA) to propose new public-space interventions, such as urban furniture pavilions, for the grounds of the scenic pier of the MAA.

Students will first learn advanced digital modelling, scripting and parametric computational design before deriving their own set of computationally generated architectural iterations for a programme brief. They will then work with digital fabrication using CNC, laser cutters and  robotic arms to achieve full three-dimensional control of material in conjunction with 3D printers. Individuals will produce their own series of computational interventions and small prototypes and, as a group produce a large 1:1 installation for a public exhibition.

The teaching team will consist of  by VISHU BHOOSHAN – CODE ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS ( http://www.zha-code-education.org/ ) and ALICIA NAHMAD – AA DESIGN RESEARCH LABORATORY (http://drl.aaschool.ac.uk/), along with Brazilian assistant-tutors from the INSTITUTO TECGRAF of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica Rio de Janeiro, as well as architects from SUBdV architecture. Students will learn advance digital modelling tools such as maya and rhino, as well as scripting and parametric skills in rhino grasshopper and C++. No previous experience is needed, all software and fabrication techniques will be taught from zero. Students will learn how to program and prepare files to be cut, milled and shaped by the CNC, laser cutter and robot arm, and 3d printers.
